Our Stories Live On - A Métis Learning Journey (Workshop 3 of 6)
La Nouvelle Nation — 1820–1869
Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 3:00–5:00 PM
Otipemisiwak Métis Government Calgary Satellite Office
Suite 214, 1530 27 Avenue NE, Calgary, AB
Presented in partnership by the Calgary Elbow Métis District, Calgary Nose Hill Métis District, and the University of Calgary Werklund School of Education.
In the 1800's a distinct group of Indigenous people were becoming a Nation.
Using Sherry Farrell Racette’s The Métis: A Visual History, we will explore a period when Métis communities, culture, trade, governance, buffalo hunting traditions, and political identity flourished across the Northwest.
Through images, stories, and discussion, discover how strong family and community networks helped shape La Nouvelle Nation — the New Nation and a growing sense of collective Métis identity.
Made Possible Through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund - Catholic Diocese of Calgary
This workshop is offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF). This funding helps us create opportunities for Métis citizens to reconnect with our history, culture, land-based knowledge, stories, and traditions, while ensuring these teachings continue to be shared with future generations.
We are grateful to the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund for supporting this important work of cultural reconnection, learning, and community.
