The Stories Live On - A Métis Learning Journey (Workshop 2 of 6)

The New People — 1690–1812

Saturday, October 17, 2026 | 3:00–5:00 PM
Otipemisiwak Métis Government Calgary Satellite Office
Suite 214, 1530 27 Avenue NE, Calgary, AB

Presented in partnership by the Calgary Elbow Métis District, Calgary Nose Hill Métis District, and the University of Calgary Werklund School of Education.

Where does the Métis story begin?

Drawing on Sherry Farrell Racette’s The Métis: A Visual History, this workshop explores the emergence of the Métis as a distinct people.

Through visual history, stories, and discussion, we will look at family and kinship networks, the fur trade, cultural exchange, and the relationships that contributed to the development of early Métis communities.

Join us as we explore the generations who laid the foundations for a distinct Métis identity, culture, and Nation.

Made Possible Through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund - Catholic Diocese of Calgary

This workshop is offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF). This funding helps us create opportunities for Métis citizens to reconnect with our history, culture, land-based knowledge, stories, and traditions, while ensuring these teachings continue to be shared with future generations.

We are grateful to the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund for supporting this important work of cultural reconnection, learning, and community.

Will you come?
